Sabres Should Swing Big Trade For Canadiens Defender

After striking out on Jacob Trouba, the Sabres should turn their attention to this Canadiens defender.

OTP - Who Will Fill The Sabres Top-Six Hole?

The Buffalo Sabres were one of the top suitors for Jacob Trouba, but in the end, they struck out. Trouba was traded to the Anaheim Ducks and will now be a key part of their rebuild moving forward.

With the Sabres making a push for Trouba, it is clear that they want to improve the right side of their defense. It is understandable, as it is an area that could use an upgrade. When looking at potential trade candidates, one player who stands out is Montreal Canadiens defenseman David Savard.

One good element about Savard is that he has zero trade protection. This means that he would not have the power to block a trade to the Sabres, which could make him a very appealing target for Buffalo.

Savard is also a pending unrestricted free agent on a Canadiens club likely to be sellers. At this juncture of the campaign, they are at the bottom of the Atlantic Division with a 10-13-3 record. Thus, Savard is expected to be made available this season.

When looking at the Sabres' roster, Savard could be a perfect addition to Buffalo's second pairing with Owen Power. In addition, due to his shutdown ability, he would be a clear option for their penalty kill.

Savard has played in 25 games this season, where he has five assists, 24 hits, 65 blocks, and a minus-5 rating.
