Erik Johnson has been generating some buzz in the rumor mill. Which teams could consider targeting him?

In a recent episode of the 32 Thoughts podcast, Elliotte Friedman mentioned that Buffalo Sabres defenseman Erik Johnson is a "name to watch" as we get closer to the 2024 NHL Trade Deadline. It ultimately makes sense, as he has an expiring contract, and he could be a decent addition for playoff teams looking to improve their right side.
Due to this, which teams could consider bringing in the veteran defenseman? Let's discuss three possible options now.
The Tampa Bay Lightning will be buyers at the deadline, and one area that they are aiming to improve is the right side of their defense. If they strike out on targets like Chris Tanev and Sean Walker, a player like Johnson could make sense for them.

Johnson would be a nice fit on their bottom pairing and could see time on their penalty kill if acquired. With that, he would give them another experienced leader, which certainly would be a nice perk for a team with high expectations like Tampa Bay. However, for any Johnson move to occur with the Bolts, Buffalo would need to retain salary.
Similar to the Lightning, the New Jersey Devils are also eyeing defensemen. Dougie Hamilton is out long-term, and their right side could simply use more depth. Due to this, they could become a suitor for Johnson over these next few weeks.
If the Sabres retain a good portion of Johnson's salary, that would also make a potential move to New Jersey easier. If acquired, Johnson would be a potential upgrade to their bottom pairing. With that, the Devils would also gain a player who has won the Stanley Cup before.
Adding a bottom-pairing right-shot defenseman could be on the Oilers' agenda this deadline season. They have been connected to a few right-shot defensemen like Walker and Lyubushkin, so Johnson could be a decent backup plan for them as well.

Johnson would provide them with another option for their bottom pairing and simply more defensive depth to work with. However, they would need to get creative to make a deal work financially.
An honorable mention should also go out to Johnson's former team – the Colorado Avalanche. He had a successful tenure there and is greatly respected by the organization, so perhaps Colorado could explore a potential reunion. Yet, their two top needs right now are adding a second-line center and 1B goaltender.
