The Buffalo Sabres re-signed defenseman Joseph Cecconi to a one-year, two-way contract worth $775,000, the team announced Friday.
He was eligible to become an unrestricted free agent July 1.
The Sabres acquired Cecconi, a Youngstown native, in a trade with the Dallas Stars on Dec. 15 in exchange for Oskari Laaksonen. He quickly became a key part of the Amerks’ defense corps, his game complementing the team’s more offensive blue-line talents.
Cecconi had eight points (three goals, five assists) in 41 games with Rochester after two assists in 12 games with the Texas Stars. He added five points (two goals, three assists) in 14 games in the Amerks’ run to the Eastern Conference final in the Calder Cup Playoffs.
The 26-year-old has played 217 AHL games since turning pro following a four-year career at the University of Michigan. He’ll likely again play an important role next season and help what will be a younger group on the back end with the arrivals of rookie defensemen Ryan Johnson and Nikita Novikov.
Dallas selected Cecconi in the fifth round (No. 133) of the 2015 NHL Draft.
