Pelletier, who missed more than half of the season due to shoulder surgery, was knocked from Monday's game after being the recipient of a hard check

Jakob Pelletier and the Calgary Flames appear to have dodged a bullet.

Pelletier, the Calgary Flames rookie left winger, is listed as day-to-day by the team with an upper-body injury suffered in Monday’s 2-0 loss to the New York Rangers.

Pelletier was on the receiving end of a hellacious check from Rangers defenceman Jacob Trouba midway through the first period, and appeared to be favouring his left shoulder when he departed the ice and did not return. Pelletier did not practice on Wednesday in preparation for Thursday’s home clash with the San Jose Sharks.

The 2019 first-round draft choice, who plays a smart game and is known for his upbeat attitude, missed more than half of the season after requiring shoulder surgery following a hit-from-behind during the pre-season. There was understandable concern Pelletier's surgically repaired shoulder was re-injured.

He worked back to health and after playing four games for the AHL Wranglers, suited up in four NHL contests and collected one assist while primarily on an effective fourth line with Kevin Rooney and Walker Dueher.

What 'day-to-day' actually means remains to be seen. Thursday's clash is the first of four straight at the Saddledome, a homestand that also has the Detroit Red Wings, Winnipeg Jets and Boston Bruins visiting the Saddledome.

Cole Schwindt, skated in Pelletier’s place in practice. Schwindt, who was on the recent four-game road trip but didn’t play, was sent to the Wranglers upon the club’s return to Calgary. He scored in the Wranglers’ 4-2 victory over the Manitoba Moose on Tuesday before being recalled. Schwindt has been held without a point in three NHL games this season.
