Phillips, who hails from Calgary, was a minor-league star but played just three NHL games for the Flames before signing with the Capitals as a free agent

Matthew Phillips is available for the Calgary Flames to bring back into the fold.

Phillips, the Calgary product and former Flames farmhand who signed via free agency with the Washington Capitals last summer, was placed on waivers on Thursday, and likely ticked to the AHL Hershey Bears if he’s unclaimed.

Teams have until Friday at noon Calgary time to put in a claim for the 25-year-old right wing.

Phillips, drafted in the sixth-round by Calgary in 2016, played only three games for the Flames over his five years as a pro. Generously listed as 5-foot-8, 160-lbs., Phillips was a standout for Calgary farm teams. Depending on how you feel, he was never given a proper chance to show his stuff with the Flames or his game failed to translate at the NHL level.

Phillips, who signed a one-year, $775,000 contract with the Capitals, has collected one goal and four assists, while averaging 10:16 of ice time in 27 NHL games this season. His lone goal came in a two-point outing against the Flames on Oct. 16, in which he sparked Washington to a 3-2 shootout victory, his second game of the season.
