The Calgary Flames have added a new piece to their blue line, acquiring defenceman Jacob Middleton along with three draft picks in a trade with the Minnesota Wild.
In the deal, Calgary receives Middleton plus a 2027 third-round pick, a 2028 fourth-round pick, and a 2029 second-round pick. Going the other way are forward Blake Coleman and defenceman Olli Määttä, with the Flames also retaining 50 percent of Coleman’s salary.

The 30-year-old left-shot defenceman brings size, reliability, and steady defensive play to Calgary’s roster. Last season with the Wild, Middleton appeared in 75 regular-season games, contributing 16 points on two goals and 14 assists while playing a consistent shutdown role.
Originally a seventh-round pick (210th overall) by the Los Angeles Kings in 2014, Middleton has carved out a steady NHL career over nine seasons, establishing himself as a physical, dependable presence on the back end. The Wainwright, Alberta native is currently in the second year of a four-year contract carrying a $4.35 million cap hit.
While the return may not have been exactly what some expected on the surface, Calgary’s approach appears focused on reshaping its roster balance. As noted by Sportsnet’s Eric Francis, the move is viewed internally as part of an effort to reduce disruption and add more grit and structure to the lineup.
For a Flames team looking to stabilize its defensive group, Middleton projects as a player who can bring experience, toughness, and a straightforward defensive game to a younger blue line.
