The Calgary Wranglers, the top team in the AHL Pacific Division, will be without their interim head coach, Joe Cirella, who underwent routine eye surgery and will miss some time recovering.
In his place, Brett Sutter will take over and lead the Wranglers for the next two weeks, starting with this weekend's series against the Abbotsford Canucks before their break for the AHL All-Star Classic on Feb 2 and 3 at Palm Desert, CA.
Sutter will be the Wranglers' third coach this season, following Trent Cull, currently an interim assistant coach with the Calgary Flames, and Cirella, who has been running the bench since Dec. 22.
Calgary is not only the top team in the Pacific Division with a 28-13-2-0 record and 58 points but remains the top team in the AHL, one point ahead of the Hershey Bears.
As the top team in the Pacific Division at the time of the selections for the AHL All-Star Classic, Cull was tapped to coach the Pacific team, but that responsibility fell to Cirella when he was called up to the Flames.
Sutter will be the next man up for the AHL Pacific Division All-Stars, which features current Wranglers players Rory Kerins and Devon Cooley.
