As the NHL concludes its annual award announcements, it's time to look back at which trophies have eluded the Calgary Flames in their history, including the Hart Trophy and Frank J. Selke Trophy.

The NHL has 15 individual awards, including the Ted Lindsay, Norris, and Vezina Trophies, with two team awards, the Presidents' Trophy and the Stanley Cup. After 53 seasons, a member of the Calgary Flames has won at least one of those awards, except for two: the Hart Trophy and the Frank J. Selke Trophy.

The organization's first NHL Award went to Eric Vail, who captured the Calder Memorial Trophy in 1975, and their latest win was when current captain Mikael Backlund took home the King Clancy Trophy in 2023.

As of the 2026 season, the closest a Flames player has come to winning the Hart Trophy was Jarome Iginla, who finished second in both the 2002 (434 votes) and 2004 (253 votes) seasons. Meanwhile, three players have finished second in the Selke Trophy race: Colin Patterson (73 votes) in 1989, Craig Conroy (178 votes) in 2002, and Elias Lindholm (878 votes) in 2022.

Flames' Hart Trophy History

Dan Bouchard was the first player in team history to receive votes for the Hart Trophy, finishing 16th with a single vote in 1979.

During Calgary's most successful decade, the 1980s, when they captured two Presidents' Trophies (1988, 1989) and a Stanley Cup (1989), five different players from that era earned votes for the Hart Trophy, including Kent Nilsson (1981, 1984), Lanny McDonald (1983), Rejean Lemelin (1984), Gary Suter (1988), and Joe Mullen (1989). Mullen had the highest finish of all those players, finishing fifth in voting with a single vote.

During the 1990-91 season, the Flames had two players in the Top 10 in voting, with Theo Fleury finishing fifth and Al MacInnis finishing eighth. In 1995, Fleury finished fifth again, while Iginla closed out the decade with a 17th-place finish in 2000.

As arguably the greatest player in franchise history, Iginla holds the record for most Hart Trophy votes, finishing second in 2002 and 2004, 15th in 2007, third in 2008, 10th in 2009, and 12th in 2011.

Of course, Iginla was on pace to capture the Flames' first Hart Trophy in 2002, but controversy rained down when Montreal Canadiens goalie Jose Theodore won instead. That year, both players earned 434 votes apiece, but Theodore had more first-place votes, 26-23, to win the tiebreaker.

Meanwhile, franchise wins leader Miikka Kiprusoff is next in line with three top-20 Hart Trophy finishes, earning the fourth-most votes in 2004, the third-most in 2006, and the 20th-most in 2009.

Since 2007, only six Flames players have received votes, including Dion Phaneuf (12th place) in 2008, Jiří Hudler (13th) in 2015, Mark Giordano (9th) in 2018-19, and Matthew Tkachuk (14th) in 2021-22. The late Gaudreau finished 4th in both the 2019 and 2022 campaigns.

The last Calgary player to earn votes for league MVP was Dustin Wolf, who earned three votes for his performance during the 2024-25 season, finishing 15th overall.

Flames' Selke Trophy History

Through 53 seasons, a player from the Flames organization has earned a vote for the Frank J. Selke Trophy in 32 campaigns. Surprisingly, 18 of those times resulted in a Top 10 finish, with several players achieving the feat multiple times.

  • Second - Colin Patterson (1989), Craig Conroy (2002), Elias Lindholm (2022)
  • Third - Joel Otto (1993, 1995)
  • Fourth - Mikael Backlund (2017)
  • Fifth - Doug Risenbrough (1983), Theo Fleury (1991)
  • Sixth - Doug Gilmour (1989), Mikael Backlund (2023)
  • Seventh - Stéphane Yelle (2006)
  • Eighth - Mikael Backlund (2019)
  • Ninth - Doug Gilmour (1990), Gary Roberts (1994), Daymond Langkow (2007)
  • Tenth - Don Lever (1981), Elias Lindholm (2019, 2023)

Awarded annually “to the forward who best excels in the defensive aspects of the game," it is no surprise to see many memorable Flames players in the mix for the award on a yearly basis, including Backlund (eight seasons), Otto (seven), Iginla (five), and Conroy (five).

Overall, 28 different players have received votes for the Selke Trophy, besides the ones previously mentioned, including

  • Shean Donovan
  • Sean Monahan
  • Richard Kromm
  • Rene Bourque
  • Matthew Tkachuk
  • Matthew Lombardi
  • Kristian Huselius
  • Johnny Gaudreau
  • John Tonelli
  • Jim Peplinski
  • Jean Pronovost
  • Jarome Iginla
  • Derek Ryan
  • Brendan Morrison
  • Blake Coleman
  • Bill Clement

Interestingly, Backlund, who debuted with the Flames in 2009 and became a regular in 2010, has received Selke Trophy votes in eight of the past ten seasons, except for the 2021 and 2026 campaigns.

Flames NHL Awards History

As the Flames' first award winner, Vail is one of five players to be named Rookie of the Year, along with Willi Plett (1977), Gary Suter (1986), Joe Nieuwendyk (1988), and Sergei Makarov (1990).

Besides boasting five Calder Trophy winners in their history, there have been five Flames players to win the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy, including Bob MacMillan (1979), Mullen (1987, 1989), Hudler (2015), and Gaudreau (2017).

Despite their success with the aforementioned awards, only 10 other players and coaches have won the remaining NHL awards:

  • Art Ross Trophy: Iginla (2002)
  • Bill Masterton Trophy: McDonald (1983), Roberts (1996)
  • Conn Smythe Trophy: MacInnis (1989)
  • Jack Adams Award: Bob Hartley (2015), Darryl Sutter (2022)
  • King Clancy Trophy: McDonald (1988), Nieuwendyk (1995), Iginla (2004), Backlund (2023)
  • Maurice Richard Trophy: Iginla (2002, 2004)
  • Mark Messier Leadership Award: Iginla (2009), Giordano (2020)
  • James Norris Trophy: Giordano (2019)
  • Ted Lindsay Award: Iginla (2002)
  • William M. Jennings Trophy: Kiprusoff (2006)
  • Vezina Trophy: Kiprusoff (2006)

Throughout their history, a player from the Flames has captured nearly every major NHL award except the Hart Trophy and the Frank J. Selke Trophy. With young core players such as Wolf, Connor Zary, Matt Coronato, and Zayne Parekh emerging, the organization hopes one of them can finally end those droughts.
