You should've seen this one coming.
The young California kid is in the second-last year of his contract which means he is eligible for a new contract with the franchise on or after July 1.
There is no shortage of evidence he has earned it.
He is one of three finalists of the Calder Memorial Trophy. That has has come by way of a 29-16-8 record in his rookie season, registering a GAA and a save-percentage of 2.64 and 0.91 respectively.
It will only be very interesting to see, to say the least, which Wolf shows up next season if the 2019 seventh-round pick has the financial stress off his back.
Bahl was a welcome surprise for Calgary, establishing himself as vital blue line pair alongside Rasmus Andersson.
In my last article about the Swede, I mentioned that in the 2024-25 season, the pairing of Andersson and Bahl produced the seventh-highest expected Goals For (xGF) and fourth-highest Shots For (SF) in the league for players with 200 or more minutes on the ice, according to Natural Stat Trick.
He also had the second-highest On-ice Shooting Percentage amongst the top six Flames players with the most On-ice Shots For, as per Natural Stat Trick
Apart from those facts, the team lacks in left-handed defencemen. And of all the lefties that the Flames do have, Bahl stands outs head and shoulders above the rest.
Signing him is a no-brainer.
Klapka recently represented the Czechs in the 2025 World Championships. He started off hot scoring two goals and three points in the game against Kazakhstan, but produced zero points in his other three appearances against Hungary for an ice-time of 9:58 (12 shifts for 49 seconds), Germany for an ice-time of 13:56 (19 shifts of 44 seconds) and the United States for an ice-time of 10:02 (14 shifts of 43 seconds).
In the quarter-final against hockey powerhouse Sweden, he didn't get much ice-time, playing just four shifts for just 4:44.
While ultimately the former undraftee did lose ice-time in the crucial game, he did gain valuable experience. And on a team where you can share a locker room and skate in practice with the likes of David Pastrnak and Martin Necas? That is a once-in-a-lifetime exposure.
Furthermore, last season, Klapka was amongst the top offensive rookies for the Flames. Not only did he score the most points (10) of all rookies, but his expected Goals For Percentage (xGF%) was the highest amongst Calgary newcomers at 52.27, as per Natural Stat Trick. Out of the eight rookies that played for the Flames, only three had an xGF% above 50%: Klapka, Matt Coronato (51.66) and Connor Zary (52.2).
Coronato has already been re-signed.
Signing Zary isn't as straightforward given his injury concerns.
What do you think? Should the Flames sign Connor Zary? Share your comments about this piece?
