After a "loosey-goosey" start, the Hurricanes found their hunger in the final frame, riding Will Carrier’s first goal of the season to a gritty road victory.
The Carolina Hurricanes grabbed a late goal Thursday night to move past the New York Islanders 5-3 at UBS Arena.
Will Carrier scored his first of the year for the game-winner and Brandon Bussi made 24 saves for his first win since Oct. 10.
After the game, Hurricanes coach Rod Brind'Amour spoke with the media in New York. Here's what he had to say:
Rod Brind'Amour
On scoring twice on three shots to start the game: They went in. It was one of those... couple nice plays to get up the ice and capitalize. Then I didn't think we were very good for two periods. But had a good third period. Finally got doing kind of what we needed to do and then pulled it out.
On what changed in the third period: We were just playing loosely goosey and that's kind of what happens sometimes. You go up two and you think, 'Okay, we don't have to do it right,' and it's the NHL. They did what they had to do. Got back in the game and then we kind of figured it out. What we had to do was get playing with a little hunger. We got a big goal from Will.
On the amount of breakaways his team gave up: We were just letting guys get behind us. We were taking chances. We were doing things we don't normally do and they made us pay.
On the penalty kill: We were good at the end, we weren't very good early. They had good looks and we got a little bit fortunate on that. But I thought the last one in the third we had to kill, I thought we did a nice job of that.
On getting back in the win column: I didn't love our game in Nashville and I didn't love our game here. We're not going to play great every night, but there's a certain way you have to play to win and we eventually got to it tonight. It's a tough league. You have to be on your toes every night or you don't win.
