The Carolina Hurricanes head into Day 2 of the 2024 NHL Draft as one of the busiest teams with 10 picks under their belt.

After trading out of the first round last night, trading the 27th overall pick to the Chicago Blackhawks for the 34th and 50th overall picks, the Canes have a good stock of picks.

They hold three seconds, a third, a fourth, a fifth, three sixths and a seventh round pick this year and who knows, they may even stockpile some more as the day goes on.

Here is the current list of picks the Canes hold by draft position:

  • 34th (Round 2)
  • 50th (Round 2)
  • 60th (Round 2)
  • 92nd (Round 3)
  • 124th (Round 4)
  • 156th (Round 5)
  • 168th (Round 6)
  • 184th (Round 6)
  • 188th (Round 6)
  • 220th (Round 7)

Darren Yorke and the scouting department have done excellent work over the years in finding value in these later rounds and it's been an area where Carolina has really been able to have an advantage.

If you look at the current prospect pool, a lot of the big names came from Day 2.

Alexander Nikishin was a third round pick in 2020, Scott Morrow was a second round pick in 2021, Hobey Baker finalist Jackson Blake was a fourth round pick in 2021, Felix Unger Sorum was a second round pick in 2023.

And really, the team has historically built well through the later rounds.

Sebastian Aho, Jack Drury and Pyotr Kochetkov were all second round picks, Jaccob Slavin was a fourth round pick.

There's tons of value to be had on Day 2 of the draft and the Hurricanes are poised to have a great shot at finding some of it.

Here are some of the top names still available:

  • Nikita Artamonov - LW, KHL
  • Igor Chernyshov - LW, KHL
  • Charlie Elick - D, WHL
  • Andrew Basha - LW, WHL
  • Julius Miettinen - C, WHL
  • Ryder Ritchie - RW, WHL

Day 2 of the draft starts at 11:30 a.m. EST and will be televised on NHL Network and ESPN+.
