Yesterday, the hockey world mourned the heart breaking passing of Columbus Blue Jackets star Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew who died in a tragic accident after they were struck by a car while riding bikes in their hometown of Salem, NJ.
As the the hockey world continues to grieve and support the Gaudreau family in their time of need, at the very least, the cycle of more pleasant NHL news has started again this morning as the Daily Faceoffs' Frank Seravalli reported this morning that the Carolina Hurricanes and Seth Jarvis have agreed to terms on an eight-year extension.
The new eight-year deal reportedly is for $63.2M. Typically the AAV on a contract is calculated by dividing the total amount of the contract by the amount of years but as Seravalli reports, this deal could be precedent setter. The reason for that is, the deal appears to have deferred money as part of the contract. Normally, the cap hit on this contract would $7.9M but with deferred money it is believed Jarvis' cap hit will come in at $7.5M.
Locking up Jarvis could be the last piece of business for Hurricanes GM Eric Tulsky. Although, with Jesper Fast being sidelined for the entirety of the upcoming 2024-2025 after undergoing neck surgery, the Hurricanes may have some extra space for an addition after Fast ends up on LTIR.
In the meantime, the Hurricanes temporarily have a 23-man roster with all their RFA's signed, leaving the Canes with $775k in salary cap space. That again, will change once Fast gets placed on LTIR.
As for Jarvis, the Winnipeg, MB native will look to build on his career year from last season. Jarvis finished 2nd in scoring for the Canes behind Sebastian Aho with 33 goals, 34 assists and 67 points.
Jarvis was drafted 13th overall in the 2020 NHL draft. His 146 career total points in 231 games ranks 4th amongst his draft class behind Tim Stützle(247), Lucas Raymond(174) and Alexis Lafreniere(148).
