The Carolina Hurricanes have announced that they have signed coach Rod Brind'Amour to a multi-year contract extension.
“Rod has been instrumental to the success we’ve had over the last six seasons,” said Hurricanes general manager Don Waddell in the press release. “Ever since he joined the organization 24 years ago, Rod has embodied what it means to be a Hurricane. We hope to keep him a Hurricane for life.”
In addition, assistant coaches Jeff Daniels and Tim Gleason as well as video coach Chris Huffine and goaltending coach Paul Schonfelder have also agreed to multi-year extensions per the release.
Making sure the rest of his staff was taken care of was an important part of Brind'Amour's negotiations three years ago and I'm sure it was the same this year, hence the delay.
The longtime captain now turned coach has a 278-130-44 record in six seasons behind the bench with Carolina.
In that time, the Hurricanes have earned the third-most wins and points (600) in the NHL, three division titles, two Eastern Conference Final appearances and the Canes have won at least one postseason round in all six seasons under Brind'Amour, making him just the second coach ever behind Pat Burns to win a playoff series in each of his first six seasons.
Brind'Amour is also already nearly the most successful head coach in franchise history, ranking first in playoff wins (38) and second in regular season wins and he won the Jack Adams in 2020-21.
Brind'Amour has meant so much to the organization and city over his 24-year tenure in Raleigh. He led the team to their only Stanely Cup as captain in 2006 and he was the coach who ended the nine-year playoff drought.
He's the epitome of everything it means to be a Carolina Hurricane and he'll only continue to build his legacy in North Carolina.
