According to NHL Insider Elliotte Friedman, the Carolina Hurricanes recently reportedly made a nine-digit offer to forward Mikko Rantanen.
"I understand that during the 4 Nations break, the Hurricanes met with his representatives face-to-face," Friedman said on Sportsnet Saturday night. "They had a face-to-face conversation about where things were and where things were going and the Hurricanes made an offer. I believe the offer is into the nine digits. It's a big, big offer and Rantanen, at this point in time, has said not yes, not no, he's just said, 'I still need to process everything that's happened. The whirlwind, the emotions.' So at this point in time there's no answer from Rantanen."
The Canes acquired the superstar winger from the Colorado Avalanche earlier this year in a blockbuster deal for Martin Necas and Jack Drury.
The Finn has played just seven games for the Canes, with only one goal and two points, but his proven track record of success is something that the Hurricanes covet.
A nine-figure deal would pay Rantanen, at the very least, $12.5 million per season on an eight-year contract, which would make him the highest paid winger in the NHL.
It's not really surprising that a deal hasn't yet been reached with the Rantanen as the winger is still just a month removed from a blindside trade from the only organization he ever knew.
Add in that he joined a Hurricanes team that was, at the time, ravaged by illness, that he then spent over a week playing in the 4 Nations Face-Off and that in total, he's spent, at most, 12 days in Raleigh too and you can see why he needs some time.
But what is clear is that if the two sides want to make a deal work, money won't be an issue.
It all comes down to whether or not Rantanen wants to be in Carolina.
