The Carolina Hurricanes did what everyone expected.
Traded down a few times, grabbed more than a handful of Russians and found great, underappreciated value in later rounds.
With 10 selections made in total at the 2024 NHL Draft, the Canes came away with five defensemen and five wingers.
Six of the players were Russian, two were Swedish, one was Czech and the other Canadian.
Here's a look at all the players the Hurricanes took:
Dominik Badinka - RD, 18 (34th overall)
The 6-foot-3, righthanded blueliner is a two-way mobile defenseman.
The Czech national played in the SHL last season and was a dependable piece even while playing against men.
Nikita Artamonov - LW, 18 (50th overall)
The Russian winger made the jump to the KHL this season and produced at a steady clip, which is highly unusual for a rookie.
Artamonov had seven goals and 23 points in 54 KHL games and showcased a high-end skillset.
Noel Fransen - LD, 18 (69th overall)
Despite being on the smaller side for defensemen, Fransen was one of the best producers in the Swedish junior leagues last season.
The smooth-skating, offensive defenseman had 20 goals and 44 points in 45 games with Farjestad BK J20.
Alexander Siryatsky - LD, 17 (124th overall)
The first of three Russian defensemen taken by the Canes, Siryatsky is a safe, steady defender.
He has the frame for the league, standing at 6-foot-2, but weighing only 159-pounds leaves plenty of room needing to bulk up.
Oskar Vuollet - LW, 18 (133rd overall)
Another top end producer from the Swedish junior leagues, Vuollet had 29 goals and 61 points in 41 games with Skelleftea AIK J20.
Vuollet has high-end hockey sense and a good shot.
Justin Poirier - RW, 17 (156th overall)
The 5-foot-8 forward has the potential to be a true steal.
Poirier is one of the top scorers in the draft, being the first player since Sidney Crosby to score 50 goals in the QMJHL, but was passed over by many in the draft due to his size.
Timur Kol - LD, 17 (168th overall)
The second of the Russian defenders the Hurricanes took this year, Kol is a big boy at 6-foot-4, 200-pounds.
Kol plays a simple game, skates well and shoots hard.
Roman Shokhrin - LD, 18 (184th overall)
The final of the trio of lefty Russian defenders, Shokhrin is also 6-foot-4, 200-pounds and certainly likes to use it.
Shokhrin is a punishing defender who likes to lay big hits.
Fyodor Avramov - LW, 18 (188th overall)
The 6-foot-3 Russian winger is a physical, power forward.
Avramov had 23 goals and 44 points in 41 MHL games last season.
Andrei Krutov - LW, 18 (220th overall)
The sixth Russian picked by Carolina, Krutov had 21 goals and 50 points in 41 MHL games.
