The Carolina Hurricanes acquired a sixth-round pick Thursday night acting as a cap broker in a three-way trade for defenseman Ilya Lyubushkin.
Lyubushkin was traded from the Anaheim Ducks, who retained 50% of his cap hit, to Carolina, who retained 25%, and then ultimately to the Toronto Maple Leafs.
The Russian defenseman has a total cap hit of $2.75 million so Carolina will now be on the hook for $687,500 which leaves the Hurricanes still with a bit over $5.8 million in deadline cap space per Cap Friendly.
Also, as part of the deal, the Hurricanes sent the rights to 2019 fifth-round pick Kirill Slepets to the Leafs.
The Russian forward had eight goals and 19 points in 53 KHL games this season and 30 total points in 127 KHL games.
