According to Carolina Hurricanes team reporter, Walt Ruff, the Canes have extended a qualifying offer to defenseman Dylan Coghlan.
The 24-year old, right-handed defenseman had three points in 17 games last year while primarily being Carolina's seventh-D all season.
His qualifying offer comes in at an extremely affordable $813,750, so it was a no-brainer for the Canes to qualify him.
This move allows Carolina to retain their defensive depth with a player who is already familiar with their systems and it also protects the asset from being lost for nothing.
Outside of Coghlan, the Hurricanes had three other RFAs who were not extended qualifying offers: Jesse Puljujarvi, Stelio Mattheos and Dominik Bokk.
Mattheos, a 2017 third-round pick, never made the adjustment to the AHL and saw his numbers decline, Bokk, acquired in the Justin Faulk trade, had already gone back to Europe after a brief stint with in the AHL, and Puljujarvi's $3 million QO was already going to be too expensive for his current on-ice value.
It's also been reported that Puljujarvi had double-hip surgery recently, which would leave him with a lengthy recovery time.
