The Carolina Hurricanes selected goaltender Yegor Velmakin 222nd overall.
Velmakin also becomes the Hurricanes' fifth Russian and final pick of the 2023 draft.
The future of goaltending in the NHL is clearly Russian.
With almost all of the young rising goalie stars in the being Russian, it makes perfect sense to keep throwing flyers that direction. The Canes already picked one Russian netminder, Ruslan Khazheyev, in the fifth round, but it never hurts to draft multiple goaltenders late in a draft.
Velmakin is under contract with Dinamo Minsk of the KHL for next season and it should be a good benchmark season to see what the Hurricanes have in him.
