There was a time when Adam Fox committed to a future with the Carolina Hurricanes, believe it or not.

After getting assurances Fox would be willing to sign with the Carolina Hurricanes, Don Waddell, the Hurricanes general manager at the time, pulled the trigger on a trade where he sent Noah Hanifin, Elias Lindholm to the Calgary Flames in exchange for Dougie Hamilton, Micheal Ferland, and the signing rights to Adam Fox.

“The agent said, ‘If we trade for him, he’ll absolutely sign with us,’” Waddell said of Fox’s agent.

However, two weeks after this trade was completed, Fox’s camp informed the Hurricanes that he would only sign with the New York Rangers, according to Waddell.

The Hurricanes ultimately traded Fox to the Rangers for two second-round picks, and the rest is history as Fox went on to win the Norris Trophy in 2021 and is still a prominent piece for the Blueshirts today.

It’s something that still haunts Waddell to this day.

“You remember those things for sure,” Waddell said about the Fox situation. “Things like that stick with you.”
