The NHL Trade Deadline is less than 48 hours away and all around the league, teams are gearing up for playoff runs (I mean, have you seen what the two teams in Florida are doing?).
While many people seem to be expecting some more activity out of the Carolina Hurricanes, I wouldn't.
For one, the Canes already made a major move a little over a month ago by bringing in both Mikko Rantanen and Taylor Hall.
The pair of established wingers are both proven players and the Hurricanes are expecting each to bring a bit more oomph to the roster come postseason time.
And no, I don't think they're going to be trading Rantanen by Friday either. In my opinion, this all just seems like a media-influenced pipe dream.
When they acquired the Finnish winger in January, they weren't doing it just for a rental. They wanted to sign Rantanen long-term and with a nine-figure offer on the table, that is still very much clearly the plan.
Panic-moving Rantanen isn't going to net them anywhere near his value and it's not like the signing deadline is the trade deadline. Once March 7 passes, Carolina will still have multiple months to continue working on getting an extension signed with the the Finnish star.
Also, moving Rantanen would signal to the team that the front office doesn't believe in them, despite the Canes currently sitting eighth overall in league standings. You don't have to be the best team in the league to win the Stanley Cup, you just have to get hot at the right time and we've seen that time and time again in the postseason.
I also don't think we'll see another major move because the Hurricanes don't want to shake up team chemistry any more this season than they already have.
They've seen the effect major moves can have on a locker room and also just how much time it can take to integrate players into their system, so you don't really want to make any more major shakeups at this point of the season.
If the Canes were to make a move, the most likely positions they'd seek out would be a physical, right-handed bottom-six center and/or an offensive seventh defenseman to supplement the group should something happen to Shayne Gostisbehere on the backend.
