Take that interim tag and throw it away.
The Carolina Hurricanes have announced today that Eric Tulsky has officially been named the team's general manager following a short search.
"Eric is ready for this opportunity,” said team owner Tom Dundon in a press release. “He has a proven history of managing people and overseeing operations both outside of hockey and over the last decade with the Hurricanes. His dedication, work ethic and attention to detail make him the ideal candidate to become our next general manager. Everything we do here is collaborative, and Eric will work closely with Darren Yorke, Rod Brind’Amour and our leadership team to continue building a championship-caliber hockey club.”
Tulsky has been with the organization since 2014 when he was originally brought on as a consultant and he's consistently worked his way up the ranks since then from analyst to manager of hockey analytics to vice president of hockey management and strategy to assistant general manager and now general manager.
The Philadelphia native holds a B.A. in chemistry and physics from Harvard University and a doctorate in chemistry from UC Berkeley. Before working for the Hurricanes, Tulsky worked in the tech industry managing teams of researchers primarily focused on utilizing nanotechnology to solve problems in DNA sequencing, solar energy, displays, and energy storage.
So how did he end working for an NHL team?
Well Tulsky, a long time hockey fan, actually wrote for BroadStreetBullies, the former SB Nation Philadelphia Flyers team site, where he delved deep into the analytics of hockey as a sort of hobby on the side.
As an accomplished scientist, Tulsky holds over 20 patents on a variety of technologies from battery components to nanotechnology, but who knew it would be his numerous analytical pieces diving deep into topics such as the numerical value of draft picks as well as the importance of controlling the neutral zone and entering the zone with possession that would be more in line with his future career.
Even with a heavy analytical and data-centric background, Tuslky isn't just a "computer guy" either.
He's overseen the Canes' pro scouting department and has been heavily involved in contract negotiations, salary cap compliance and the team's hockey information department.
This is a guy, who on top of being incredibly "book smart," is also very "hockey smart" too due to his prolonged involvement in all aspects of hockey as well.
