The Ottawa Senators announced on Monday that they have named former Carolina Hurricanes goaltender Justin Peters as their new goaltending coach.

“Zac [Bierk] is exceptionally dedicated,” said Ottawa Senators general manager Steve Staios in the press release. “However, it is our belief that the time has come for a fresh perspective. Justin Peters is highly regarded and will bring strong leadership qualities to our group. He’s deserving of this opportunity. We’re excited to welcome him to Ottawa.”

Peters, who was drafted by the Canes in the second-round of the 2004 draft, played parts of five seasons with Carolina from 2010-2014.

He appeared in 68 games for the Hurricanes, posting a 22-31-8 record with a 0.904 save percentage and three shutouts in primarily a backup role.

The Blyth, Ontario native didn't play in the NHL too long after his time in Carolina, playing just 15 more games for both the Washington Capitals and Arizona Coyotes.

His last season playing professional in North America was 2016-17 and he finished his playing career in 2019-20 playing in the Czech Republic.

Starting in 2020-21, he became the goaltending coach for the Belleville Senators of the AHL and now he's managed to find his way back into the NHL.
