After 770 regular season games, former Hurricane Brandon Sutter has announced his retirement from the NHL.
The 34-year-old center played for three NHL teams — Carolina Hurricanes (286 games), Pittsburgh Penguins (209) and Vancouver Canucks (275) — and was on a PTO with the Edmonton Oilers this preseason before calling it quits.
A 2007 first-round draft pick, Sutter played for four seasons in Carolina totaling 53 goals and 107 points in 286 games.
He was ultimately traded from the Hurricanes to the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2011 along with prospect Brian Dumoulin and a 2011 first-round pick for current Canes captain Jordan Staal.
He would play for three seasons in Pittsburgh before being traded to the Vancouver Canucks, who he would play the remainder of his career with.
Sutter was regarded as a two-way, defensive center with strong penalty killing results, but he did have two 20+ goal seasons and eight 10+ goal seasons.

His final season was 2020-21 as he would miss considerable time due to complications with contracting COVID-19 and suffering through long-COVID symptoms.
He missed all of the last two seasons and was attempting a comeback on a PTO with the Oilers before deciding to retire.
In a statement released by Sutter and the Edmonton Oilers, he said:
-“I’m grateful for the opportunity that (general manager) Ken (Holland), (head coach) Jay (Woodcroft), and the Oilers organization have provided to me the past few weeks. You need to be 100 percent healthy to compete in the NHL and although my health continues to improve, in consideration of my health and family, I am officially retiring from hockey.
"Thank you to the Oilers, Canucks, Penguins and Hurricanes, as well as all my past coaches, trainers and teammates for the incredible experiences throughout my 13 seasons in the NHL.”
