After missing over half of the season due to a blood-clotting issue revealed as deep-vein thrombosis and subsequent pulmonary embolisms, Frederik Andersen is set to finally make his return to game action.
The 34-year-old netminder has been out since early November, but he was cleared to return to on-ice activities in February. Since then, Andersen has been a consistent presence at practice and has been steadily ramping up his effort.
Now, he'll be back in an NHL crease.
Andersen appeared in only six games for the Hurricanes this season, as he also dealt with a concussion near the start of the year, and posted a 4-1-0 record with a 0.894 save percentage and 2.87 goals against average.
Last season, the Danish netminder played in 34 regular season games with a 21-11-1 record, 0.903 save percentage and 2.58 goals against average, but his playoff run was one of the best as he posted a 0.927 save percentage across nine games.
Carolina has found a lot of success with Pyotr Kochetkov this season so he'll still be the presumed starter, but if Andersen can get back up to speed here, he could be an invaluable insurance piece for the Canes.
And with Antti Raanta going on waivers earlier today, the Hurricanes are locking in Andersen as one of their three goaltenders for the remainder of the season.
