Hurricanes coach Rod Brind'Amour was in a light mood following Tuesday's practice.

With two points last night, Carolina Hurricanes forward Martin Necas tied Nathan MacKinnon for the league lead in scoring with 35 points.

It was the first time a Hurricanes player has led the league in scoring after at least 20 games into a year since the 2006-07 season.

And that Canes player was...?

Well Hurricanes coach Rod Brind'Amour was asked that same question following the team's practice on Tuesday.

"I'll make a good guess, but I would say it's probably Eric Staal?" Brind'Amour said.

Not a bad guess for the coach as Staal holds the team record for points in a season with 100, but he set that mark a year earlier and didn't end up pacing the league either.

Brind'Amour was given a pretty big hint following that first guess as he was told the player was "in the room," which pretty much narrowed the choices down to one option: Himself.

"Really? Geez, I was a good player, huh?" Brind'Amour said, chuckling.

That season, Brind'Amour was tied with Marian Hossa on Nov. 18, 2006 for the league lead in scoring as both had 31 points in 22 games.

Brind'Amour, who was 36 that year, would go on to finish the year with 82 points just one behind Ray Whitney for the team lead but Sidney Crosby wound up running away with the Art Ross, putting up a total of 120 points.

The Hurricanes coach played 1,484 games in the league, putting up 452 goals and 1,184 points and captained Carolina to their one and only Stanley Cup in 2005-06.

So safe to say, I'd have to agree that he was in fact a good player.

Really, a Hockey Hall of Fame level of good.
