The rights to Swedish forward prospect Zion Nybeck expired Saturday at the 5 p.m. deadline on June 1.
The Carolina Hurricanes' 2020 fourth-round pick has played his entire career in Sweden and it looks like that will continue.
Nybeck had some experience playing in the SHL, Sweden's top league, but he never really established himself and played exclusively in the HockeyAllsvenskan, Sweden's second league, the last two seasons.
The Swede had impressed in his draft year due to his skating ability and offensive flare playing amongst his peers, but as he got older and moved up to the men's leagues, his lack of size (Nybeck is listed at 5-foot-8 and 181lbs) seemed to limit him.
