The Carolina Hurricanes have signed 2021 seventh-round pick Joel Nystrom to a two-year, entry-level contract.

The deal will pay Nystrom $832,500 at the NHL level and $80,000 at the AHL level. It also includes a $185,000 signing bonus.

The contract also contains a European reassignment clause so Nystrom could potentially stay in Sweden for another season or come over to play in the AHL.

“Joel is a right-shot defenseman with offensive upside,” said Hurricanes general manager Don Waddell. “He has continued to improve year over year in the SHL, and we’re thrilled for him to take the next steps in his development.”

Nystrom, 21, registered eight goals and 26 points in 51 SHL games with Farjestad BK this season. 

The 5-foor-11 blueliner has skated in 170 SHL games over his career registering 19 goals and 59 points. in that span.
