Last week, the Carolina Hurricanes reached a deal on an extension for forward Seth Jarvis.

The two sides agreed on an eight-year, $63.2 million deal that locks up one of the NHL's brightest blossoming stars.

On Wednesday, the Canes held a press conference with Jarvis and Hurricanes GM Eric Tulsky. Here's what Tulsky had to say:

Opening Statement: Rod asks a lot of our players and we demand a lot. There are not many people who not only do everything we ask, but exceed in what we ask. Seth is one of those players. It's really great for us to be able to lock him up and have him commit to playing for us for the next eight years and hopefully beyond that too. It's a big day for the franchise to have a cornerstone player like him sign with the team long term. He's someone we can build around and we're glad to have him as part of it.

On using deferred payments: We were looking to keep Seth here long term and we were wanting to pay him what he's worth. We know he's just going to keep getting better and better and we wanted to be able to reward that. We also wanted to leave room to build a good team around him and win championships going forward. The agents did their job, thought through every possibility, worked with us on it and made sure we found something that worked for both sides.

On when the team started to consider using deferred payments: We started looking at it probably in May or June when interest rates got high, and so it started to be a useful tool. We brought it up in conversation, and it's a way to get where we wanted on this. The whole idea of $1 in the future being worth less than $1 today is how it works, and when interest rates are zero, there's no difference there, right? So interest rates being as high as they are are what made it work.

On if the team will utilize Jesper Fast's cap space: It's just like any other injured player. So right now, he is on our roster, using up our cap space. If we find that we need it, we can move him to long term injured reserve and use that to help continue to build the team out.

On if the team is looking to add anything else before training camp: We're always still looking around the edges. This team never sleeps. Every single day of the year, we're looking around to see if there are ways we can make the team better.

On if Jesper Fast's injury is career threatening: I don't have an update on this career at this time. All I know right now is that he's out for the year.

On why Fast didn't have the surgery earlier in the year: I don't know the medical stuff. That was when it was appropriate for them to have the surgery. I'm not sure why.
