The Carolina Hurricanes defeated the Florida Panthers 1-0 Thursday night at PNC Arena thanks to Sebastian Aho's last-minute tally.
The Finnish center turned and fired a loose puck past Sergei Bobrovsky with 19 seconds remaining in the game.
On the other side, Pyotr Kochetkov stopped all 44 shots he faced for his seventh career shutout.
After the game, Hurricanes coach Rod Brind'Amour along with Kochetkov and Aho spoke with the media. Here's what they had to say:
Rod Brind'Amour
On it feeling like a playoff game: Yeah, definitely.
On the resilience of the team: That was probably the difference in the game there. We were able to kill that four-minute penalty. That was a huge moment in the game. Did a nice job with it. And that goal getting called back was obviously huge, especially because 30 seconds before we missed an empty-netter. That happens. It was a hard-fought game.
On the Canes being tougher than last season: I don't know. The games were all like that. It's just tonight we were able to get one. All the games were tight. It felt almost like we were right back at it the way it was last year.
On having Andrei Svechnikov: He's our difference maker and that was a huge loss for us last year not having him in there. You get down against the best teams, which they are, you're not going to have a chance if your best guys aren't in there. It's just too much to ask. Svech came up big there at the end.
On Pyotr Kochetkov: Solid. Solid. I mean, he was the difference, right? He made many, many saves and obviously it was one goal that we got. We needed him to be perfect and he was.
On challenging plays for offsides: When they're close, you're always sayin 'Check it, check it,' and then we've got guys checking it in there. To be honest with you, I didn't even have to wait and hear because I saw it on the replay and it wasn't even close. So you just yell at the ref right away. Those ones are pretty obvious, but that's kind of how it works.
On overpassing in the first period: They're not going to give you a bunch of opportunities and I think we counted three where we were right there. I get that if we slide it through someone and over, it's going to go in, but they're not going to let that pass through. They're a good team. We overdid it a bit early. It happens.
On Jesper Fast's play on the game-winning goal: That was a great play by him. First of all, getting it under control and then not only making a play, but making the right one. He had to process all that, so that's really what gets the puck to our best player and then he made it count.
On the penalty kill: That's the game right there. Obviously if they score, it's probably different, but we were able to get through it.
Pyotr Kochetkov
On how fun it was: Yes, very fun. Nice choice to score at last minute. It was a good game, great team win. No comments.
On going toe-to-toe with Sergei Bobrovsky: Bob is an unbelievable goalie, an unbelievable man. Today is a little bit special day, special game. I really wanted to play together with him. It's not together, it's a battle. It's just one game.
On the the long penalty kill: I no see time. I just focus in on the puck. The boys had a lot of good blocked shots. I see a couple of shots and was lucky. Good penalty kill, great job. PK has done a great job every game.
On the 2-on-1 save: I remember. I no see puck, I just go. I no see puck, I don't know what happened. I see it after game.
On jumping into the scrum at the end of the game: I no want fight, I just want control. Panthers have six boys, my team had five boys. These guys no touch my guys.
Sebastian Aho
On the game: There's history between these two teams. You've gotta love to play these games. They're a little heated and the crowd was electric, so gotta love it.
On scoring the game-winning goal: It felt good, especially with how I missed the empty-netter, it felt extra special. Crucial time of the game, that's pretty much a guaranteed win when you score that late.
On the scrum at the end: I wasn't on the ice, but it's just what we do. We stick up for each other. I don't know what happened, but everyone was in there. Even [Kochetkov] tried to get in there. That just shows how much he cares. That's just how hockey goes some times.
On Pyotr Kochetkov's play: Unreal. What else can you ask from the goalie? He just gave us every chance to win this hockey game and it's just good to see him feeling good about himself.
On the long penalty kill: Those moments are huge. That was a big time kill. You got to have some of those experiences in you moving on. You try to build your game every day whether it's the PK or 5v5, but obviously those are good ones to have that we know we can do it in big times or a big game like this. That was a good job by us.
On Andrei Svechnikov: You take that guy out from any lineup and it's going to hurt. He plays hard and does everything for us. Just a great linemate. Happy to have him on my line. Try to make the most of it.
On Jesper Fast's play leading to the game winner: Smart plays, works hard, is always on the right side. He gives a little freedom for myself. A very smart player. The last couple of games, we've gotten rewarded and are scoring goals. But at the same time, he does it right every single game. He's not on the scoreboard every single night, but he's a good player.
On the emotional moment when he scores the go-ahead goal: It was unreal. You've gotta love playing these games. Two very good teams. Crowd was on their feet. That was just the good stuff. You just want to come out on the winning-side of these games and we were able to get that game-winner at the end. It feels good, not going to lie.
On the offsides call: Usually the guys pick it up pretty quick, but sometimes live, it's so fast so it's tough to pick those up. But that was a good challenge.
