The Hurricanes blueliner shattered his personal record with a four-assist masterclass against Vancouver, proving exactly why he remains an unsung engine of Carolina’s elite defensive core.
Sean Walker doesn't get much buzz around the NHL.
It makes sense, in a way, given that the 31-year-old blueliner is an undrafted player, who stands at just 5-foot-11 and above all else, plays in Raleigh. Can you imagine something less enticing for the national media?
But anybody with a brain for hockey and who has watched the Carolina Hurricanes for any amount of time over the last few seasons knows just how good Walker is and just how integral he's been to this team's success, being part of the league's best defensive pairing with K'Andre Miller last postseason.
"It's tough when you’ve got to play in a grouping that we have," said Carolina Hurricanes coach Rod Brind'Amour. "It’s just natural that he might get overlooked a little bit, but we don't overlook him. We know his value. He's got an offensive flair, he can make plays, so it's not surprising that he was involved in all those goals tonight. He might get overlooked a little bit, but not by us."
And Thursday night, Walker had himself a game, registering four assists on the night in Carolina's 7-2 win over the Vancouver Canucks, a new career best.
Before that outing, Walker had never had more than two assists in a single game, so it was a pretty special moment for the two-way defender.
"I don't know if I've ever had one before," Walker said. "Maybe early in my career. But yeah, I got some lucky bounces tonight, a lot of guys making really nice plays, and I’m just happy to be a part of it."
On top of the points, Walker also finished the night leading the team in ice time (21:23), with 58.33% of 5v5 chance share and a goal-saving block.
He averaged over 20 minutes a night for the first time last season and he brings top-end feistiness and competitiveness every game, not being afraid at all to get physical.
Walker has grown into a dominant two-way force with Carolina and it's good to see him get rewarded on the score sheet for the consistent effort he brings every game.
