Could the Carolina Hurricanes be looking to trade for defenseman Erik Karlsson from the Pittsburgh Penguins?

Trade rumors revolving around Karlsson have been circulating for months, but the Penguins have yet to trade the veteran defenseman.

One NHL insider not only believes Carolina would be a good fit for Karlsson, but that the Hurricanes have been doing their due diligence on Karlsson.

“If they could get him down to that $7-7.5 range for two more seasons, I think there's a team that would certainly take a flyer; I think Carolina was one of those teams that spent time investigating,” NHL insider Frank Seravalli said.

The 33-year-old defenseman still has two years on his contract at an average annual value of $11.5 million, which could cause problems for the Hurricanes to acquire him.

Pittsburgh would most likely have to eat up a large chunk of his salary for the Hurricanes to even consider moving forward with a potential trade.

However, it’s certainly an intriguing possibility to bring in Karlsson at the right price for Carolina.

While he’s not the same Norris Trophy-winning superstar he once was, Karlsson has shown he can make an impactful player on any given night, and he would certainly fit the Hurricanes' win-now window.
