The Carolina Hurricanes selected forward Timur Mukhanov 163rd overall in the 2023 NHL Draft.
The small-framed forward (5-foot-8) had eight goals and 17 points in 15 MHL games last season.
Mukhanov, through a translator, spoke with the media in Nashville following his selection.
Here's what he had to say:
*The following dialogue has been slightly edited for clarity
On how he would describe his style of play: I’m a pass player, I can play in the offensive and defensive zone. I do everything for the team and the main thing in the game for me is to win.
On if he's familiar with the Hurricanes: I know a lot of players because Carolina has selected a lot of Russians who I know because I’ve played with them or against them. I don’t know the system or Carolina’s style, but I watched a lot of highlights about Carolina and I’m really proud that they selected me.
On his familiarity with Hurricanes prospect Gleb Trikozov who plays on the same team: I know Gleb Trikozov very well. We have a really good relationship. When we played on the same line, we had good chemistry and it was a good time playing together.
On his favorite player growing up: Like every young guy from Russia, my childhood favorite player was Alex Ovechkin. But when I grew up, I started watching other players. I enjoyed the style of Kirill Kaprizov and Andrei and Evgeny Svechnikov.
On his contract status in the KHL: I have two years left with Severstal Cherepovets, but when the contract is finished, I want to come to the NHL and start my path. It’s my dream to play in the NHL.
