According to Sportsnet's Elliotte Freidman, the Carolina Hurricanes are in talks with the Philadelphia Flyers to reacquire defenseman Tony DeAngelo.
TSN insider Pierre LeBrun followed that report up by stating the Flyers would be retaining 50% of DeAngelo's $5 million AAV contract in exchange for a prospect - although not believed to be a high-end one.
The Hurricanes initially signed DeAngelo back in 2021 on a one-year, $1 million contract after he was bought out by the New York Rangers. In his lone season in Carolina, DeAngelo put up 10 goals and 51 points in 64 games.
However, following that season and due to a sizable gap in negotiations, the Canes traded his rights to the Flyers for a 2022 fourth-round, 2023 third-round and 2024 second-round pick.
The Flyers signed him to a two-year, $10 million contract, but an obvious divide grew between the defenseman and Philly head coach John Tortorella, who cut his playing time before ultimately benching him for the final five games of the season.
Now on the last year of his two-year, $5 million AAV deal, the Hurricanes are looking to bring him back in on the cheap.
While DeAngelo struggles defensively, the fact of the matter is that he's a strong power play producer and can help add a solid PP2 option behind Brent Burns.
The trade for DeAngelo would give Carolina four right-handed defensemen, but the development of Jalen Chatfield, who had a showing on his off-hand alongside Brent Burns early last season, might give them belief that their D-core can make it work.
Either that, or this provides some insurance in regards to the report that Brett Pesce will be traded if a contract extension can't be reached.
As it sits, the deal isn't done and things can still change.
