The Carolina Hurricanes have announced that they have recalled defenseman Dylan Coghlan from the Springfield Thunderbirds of the AHL.
The 26-year-old defenseman was loaned to the Thunderbirds — the AHL affiliate of the St. Louis Blues — following training camp and has a goal and two points in five games so far this season.
Coghlan's recall allows the Hurricanes to carry a bit more defensive depth as veteran defenseman Brett Pesce remains out with a lower-body injury.
The Canes have run into the injury bug a bit here early into the season as Andrei Svechnikov continues to await his season debut after having knee surgery in March, Sebastian Aho remains day-to-day with an upper-body injury and Frederik Andersen also continues to be day-to-day after taking a puck squarely off of his helmet.
Coghlan skated in 17 games with the Hurricanes last season, putting of three assists in that span. He was acquired from the Vegas Golden Knights in the 2022 offseason alongside Max Pacioretty in exchange for future considerations.
The Canes already have six NHL defenseman ready to go even in Pesce's absence, so while Coghlan may not play, he will still provide on-hand depth should anything else happen.
It will be a familiar position for Coghlan, who saw himself being Carolina's primary seventh defenseman almost all of last season.
