After a 5-2 victory over Team Czechia on Thursday, Carolina Hurricanes forward prospect Felix Unger Sorum.and Team Sweden are headed to the gold medal game in the 2024 IIHF World Junior Championship.
It's been a a good tournament for the Swedes, who shutout every opponent before the final round robin game against Team Finland, a 5-4 shootout loss.
Following the round-robin, Sweden defeated both Switzerland and Czechia en route to the gold medal game against Team USA.
The championship match will take place today (Jan. 5) at 1:30 p.m. EST and will air on NHL Network.
On top of being a good tournament for Sweden, it's been a really good showcase for Unger Sorum.
Playing on the third line and power play, Unger Sorum has picked up a goal and six points in six tournament games.
Beyond scoring, his line has done a good job at generating offense and Unger Sorum has proven to be able to go to the dirty areas and fight for pucks.
But really, what stands out is his passing ability.
He's extremely patient with the puck on his stick and has a habit of waiting just long enough for lanes to open up.
FUS was able to do that at the NHL level in the preseason this year, so it's no surprise he can do it down at the junior level.
Here's what some writers at the event in Sweden have said about Unger Sorum:
Cam Robinson - Elite Prospects
-#16 Felix Unger Sorum, RW (Carolina Hurricanes): FUS might be my second favorite player for the Swedes. He had two assists in the second period to help get the Swedes back in front and came close to scoring one of his own. Unger Sorum’s two-way game continues to impress, and he’s one of the best playmakers on the Swedish squad.
-The best line today for Sweden was their youngest as it was all the 2005-born players in David Edstrom (VGK) in between Otto Stenberg and Felix Unger Sorum (CAR). That line had played together the prior season with Sweden’s U18 team and the chemistry showed. They made a lot of tic-tac plays, with Edstrom having the primary assist on two on Stenberg’s goals, and Unger Sorum on the other. Unger Sorum went deep into Carolina’s NHL camp, and seemed to have picked up a step in his skating from a year ago to go with all of his skill.
