Pyotr Kochetkov solidifies Carolina’s crease with a multi-year deal, betting on the aggressive Russian netminder to bounce back from surgery and spearhead the franchise’s pursuit of championships.
The Carolina Hurricanes have signed goaltender Pyotr Kochetkov to a two-year extension the team announced on Friday.
The deal will pay Kochetkov $3.95 million per year, with $2.5 million of the total contract being paid out in signing bonuses.
“Pyotr is an incredibly talented goalie whose aggressive style fits our team very well,” said Carolina GM Eric Tulsky in a press release. “We believe in his ability to win games for this organization and are thrilled he wants to continue helping us pursue championships in Carolina.”
Kochetkov, 27, has 125 games of NHL experience, with a 71-38-12 record, a 0.905 save percentage and 11 shutouts.
The Russian netminder, who is on the final year of a four-year deal, is coming off of an essentially lost season, having played just nine games last year before undergoing hip surgery which kept him out for the remainder of the season.
"It was tough," Kochetkov said. "I was very happy for the guys, but if you ask about how I felt, of course it was tough. Never in my career have I played only 10 games. First time in my career where I lose so much time. It was so tough mentally, but I have motivation this season to show who I am."
Carolina now has both of its netminders under contract for the next three seasons, including this one.
