Felix Unger Sorum has shattered expectations and his elite vision and poise could be the leverage he needs to challenge for a roster spot on the title-contending Carolina Hurricanes.
When you look at Felix Unger Sorum, professional hockey player probably isn't the first thing you'd think of.
The slender, fresh faced Swede doesn't have the build one would expect from a top-end professional athlete, and his shy, quiet demeanor doesn't do him many favors in that regard either.
But those things have nothing to do with what makes an NHL player.
No, what makes Unger Sorum special are the the things he can do on the ice.
The hands, the vision, the decision making, the ability to protect the puck. That talent that he brings to the table is special and Unger Sorum is proving that he can perform against tougher and tougher competition too.
When you see him on the rink, making dazzling plays and highlight reel plays, you understand exactly why he's already knocking on the door of hockey's top league.
And with the Stanley Cup Champion Carolina Hurricanes potentially having an open roster spot, it might just be Unger Sorum's time.
"We came into camp and everyone knows Jarvy is out and I assume there's a spot available," said Carolina coach Rod Brind'Amour. "We tell guys to go after it and a lot of guys, more than one guy, is making a case for it."
In four preseason games, the Swedish winger had a buzzer-beating game winning goal, a game-sealing shootout goal, three assists, drew four separate penalties, knocked over Radko Gudas with a hit and was all around one of the most impactful players on the ice with the puck on his stick.
"[His poise is] what you noticed when he showed up three years ago," Brind'Amour said. "He had that in his first training camp. Now, he's getting a little stronger, which you knew was going to happen. When you're a teenager, you come into the league and you're not a man yet, and he's still not there. Like, he still is just going to get stronger, but now you see him actually holding onto pucks and able to absorb hits and that's the progression. The smarts have been there and they're going to continue."
According to his underlying numbers, Unger Sorum has held his own too, even while playing top minutes.
The Swede had a 54.24 CF%, 52.67 xGF% and 54.55 HDCF% while averaging around 14 minutes of even strength time per game (it's important to also note that the team's third game in Greensboro didn't have any tracking stats).
Unger Sorum was also the only player to appear in all four preseason games, playing three alongside Charlie Cerrato and Bradly Nadeau and getting the shot on a line with Sebastian Aho and Andrei Svechnikov as well.
"[Unger Sorum] is incredible," Cerrato said. "You always have to have your stick on the ice and be ready for the puck. His vision is unbelievable."
"They're such good hockey players and you learn so much just watching them," Unger Sorum said on the veterans. "It's a privilege to be allowed to play a game with them."
But this isn't just about a four-game sample size.
It's about a body of work that has been showing continuous, essentially exponential growth for over a year now.
This past season, Unger Sorum led the Chicago Wolves in scoring with 17 goals and 66 points, more than tripling his production from his first year in North America.
He continued that success into the postseason as well, where his 12 points in 14 postseason games were an integral part of the Wolves' trip to the Calder Cup Final.
"I just tried to get stronger and faster and then every day, I just tried to go out there and play my game," Unger Sorum said. "When it starts to feel better, you get the confidence too. It was a good mix of that."
"He got bigger, more mature, his diet was better," said Chicago Wolves coach Spiros Anastas. "Those are the things behind the scenes that people don't realize when we look at on-ice product. He had to figure out his off ice, which he really did."
Unger Sorum has been on the team's radar since he was drafted at just 17 years old in 2023. Even then, he showcased an extremely high hockey IQ, one that you knew could make him a potential breakout candidate.
And now that he's gotten a bit older, a big stronger (from his first training camp, Unger Sorum has added an inch of height, now being listed at 6-foot, and 14 pounds of weight, being now listed at 184 pounds), this could be the moment for the young winger.
"For me, I'm just trying to go out and do my best and see where it takes me," Unger Sorum said. "We'll see."
"This is where it gets tough," Brind'Amour said. "You have to make these decisions and so we'll see what happens. We have a day to figure it out and I guess you'll know soon enough."
