The Chicago Blackhawks have placed goaltender Arvid Soderblom on waivers, their first big change.

The Chicago Blackhawks are 4-13-1 with 9 points in the standings. They have the 2nd-worst record in the NHL, and they were not trying to be a "tanking" team coming into the year like most of the teams around them.

There are always going to be changes when there is extended losing like this. The first domino to fall came on Sunday, following a 9-2 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes. Chicago placed goaltender Arvid Soderblom on waivers.

Before anyone can be placed on IR or be recalled, Soderblom must clear waivers. If he is claimed, he will join a new organization looking for goaltending help. If not, he is likely headed to the Rockford IceHogs if they want to see what Drew Commesso can do.

The backup goalie is incredibly important in the modern-day NHL. Spencer Knight has been getting a large workload to start the season. He can't maintain this pace if he wants to be an effective goalie, especially the high-end type that he's capable of being.

So far this season, Soderblom has a record of 0-3-1 and has an .842 save percentage, with a 4.67 goals-against average. The team has been incredibly lousy in front of both Knight and Soderblom, but the Blackhawks certainly need more from the backup.

This can't be the last move made by the Blackhawks before their next game. If it is, nobody should expect different results.
