The Chicago Blackhawks made a trade at the buzzer. This one isn't like other trades as it is for the purpose of reaching the salary cap floor for a while.

Chicago is getting a 2026 sixth-round pick from the Utah Hockey Club in exchange for Victor Soderstrom, Aku Raty, and Shea Weber's cap hit of $7.8 million.

This is a good trade for Chicago as they won't have to overpay someone to reach the cap floor with a contract that will hurt them long term and they get two prospects out of it.

Soderstrom, in particular, is interesting as he is a former 11th overall pick currently playing in Sweden. It is unclear if he is going to become an NHL regular but it's worth giving him a shot when you get something else out of it as well (the cap floor).

Chicago traded Petr Mrazek and Craig Smith to the Detroit Red Wings for Joe Veleno earlier in the day which cleared up some cap space so they wanted to eat some back up to get assets in return. It will be a while before Chicago runs into trouble with the cap and it is continuing to go up.

Utah is in Chicago to take on the Blackhawks at United Center on Friday night. Two teams that play against each other came together for a small trade right at the end.

Kyle Davidson has been an active GM and he takes chances on prospects who could turn into something. Doing that while getting to the cap floor here could prove to be smart down the line.
