The Chicago Blackhawks had a couple of prospects competing in the semi-final of the World Junior Championships on Saturday night. Jiri Felcman and Team Czechia took on Oliver Moore and Team USA in the nightcap.
Earlier in the day, Team Finland beat Team Sweden in overtime to earn a spot in the Gold Medal Game. The Finnish came into this tournament wondering how far they could go and they’ve proven a lot of people wrong.
With a chance to meet Finland in that final game, Team USA took it to Czechia. They defeated them 4-1. It was Boston College's top guys Gabe Perreault and Ryan Leonard who led the way to victory for Team USA as they each scored and assisted on each other's goal.
When the game was 3-1 and Team Czechia was trying to get it tied, Oliver Moore used his incredible speed to catch up to a loose puck and threw it into the empty net.
This was Moore's first goal of the tournament but scoring wasn't necessarily his role. He has been great defensively and is a major factor when it comes to killing penalties. It also wasn't for a lack of chances as he has been all over the offensive zone in every game.
Now, Moore and Team USA have a chance to win it all. This would be the second year in a row in which the United States takes home a Gold Medal if they can defeat Finland.
This is also another chance for Kyle Davidson and his scouts to evaluate James Hagens who is a top prospect (and projected number one overall pick) in the 2025 NHL Draft. He will return to BC after the tournament is over too but this is a huge stage for him as he looks to make an impact when things matter most.
As for Jiri Felcman, he will play against Team Sweden in the Bronze Medal Game which is nothing to be ashamed of. Winning a Bronze would be great for him and his teammates as they look to eventually be pro hockey players.
