The Chicago Blackhawks may want to consider adding a guy like Kasperi Kapanen off of waivers from the St. Louis Blues.

The Chicago Blackhawks have holes all over their roster. They shouldn’t be in 32nd place like they are but they are clearly a bottom-five team. The main reason for that is their lack of depth at forward.

They don’t score a lot of goals. They have one regulation goal in each of their last five games. They are 1-4-0 in those games because they were lucky enough to find an OT winner in a 2-1 match against the Minnesota Wild during that stretch.

The Hawks aren’t going to fix their offense overnight but they might as well try to make small improvements over the year. That is why claiming Kasperi Kapanen off of waivers from the St. Louis Blues may be a good idea.

Kapanen only has one goal and no assists in ten games which is not encouraging. However, the Blackhawks don't have any scoring so taking a chance on Kapanen figuring it out is worth a shot.

In his career, he has 85 goals and 124 assists for 209 points in 470 games played. He hasn't lived up to his early career projections but he has been a decent contributor at times.

His career high in points is 44 (20-24--44) in 2018-19 as a member of the Toronto Maple Leafs. That's a long time ago but he has had 15 goals and 34 points as recently as 2022-23 when he was with the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Kapanen has been an interesting player ever since he was traded to the Maple Leafs in the deal that sent Phil Kessel back to the Penguins. He was always incredibly talented and produced here and there but was never able to become that point-per-game player Toronto hoped he would be.

It didn't work out for him this year in St. Louis but Chicago may be able to help him revive his career in a depth role. With the lowliness of the Blackhawks, they may be able to get him in the waiver order if they so choose.
