The Chicago Blackhawks need to keep Connor Bedard going. Luke Richardson must stick with what works.
Luke Richardson came up with some interesting lines ahead of Tuesday's Chicago Blackhawks game vs. the Anaheim Ducks.
With the home-ice advantage, he knew he'd be able to get matchups he wanted at United Center so he tried something new.
The most interesting change was on the top line. Instead of having Connor Bedard in the middle, he was placed on the left of Jason Dickinson, with Joey Anderson on the right.
Anderson and Dickinson are good bottom-six forwards but nobody expected to see them on the top line three-quarters of the way through November.
To the surprise of many, it worked. Connor Bedard has one of his best games of the season and they were the best line of the four by far.
Chicago's first goal was a beautiful Dickinson shot set up by Bedard's cross-ice feed. Those are the plays the Hawks need to see from Bedard.
The 19-year-old superstar wasn't done though. Later in the game, he made an incredible no-look pass to Dickinson who didn't miss his second chance either.
The Blackhawks need Bedard to carry the load offensively. His role on the team is to produce and he knows it. This game was the first time in a while that he did his job at a high level.
Going forward, Bedard should be on Dickinson's wing. It doesn't have to last for the entire season if they go cold but this line should stick as long as it stays productive. There has been a lot of line shuffling but it's time to lock this one in for a while.
Comments made by both players and the coach suggest that they enjoyed what they got out of this combination on Tuesday night.
“The kid’s a heck of a player, he can make those plays that seem like are not there." Jason Dickinson said about playing with Bedard. "I try to find open ice for him, I try to just get inside his head and see what he's seeing, and fortunately enough for a couple of goals it connected”
Dickinson was mostly frustrated during most of his post-game scrum but he certainly didn't have a struggle talking about playing with Bedard. The kid is one of those players that makes everybody around him better. Dickinson would like to continue receiving passes like that.
It also sounds like Bedard is appreciative of a player like Dickinson (and Anderson) who makes it easy for skilled guys because of how well he does the little things.
“Those two guys are so reliable in our own end, and they’re good at handling pucks and obviously [Dickinson] finding open spots." Connor Bedard said when asked about his new line. "I think they both command the puck and go get the puck and that makes it easy to play”
Bedard has struggled lately and lack of chemistry has a lot to do with it. Finally finding someone to play with will spark the mood. Sure, you'd expect it to be Taylor Hall, Teuvo Teravainen, or even a guy like Tyler Bertuzzi over Dickinson but sometimes you can't explain hockey chemistry.
Luke Richardson, who is the mastermind of this line, spoke about it after the game as well. He was clearly fond of his new creation and how it produced.
"Obviously, I thought Connor [Bedard] and [Jason] Dickinson found each other really nice, and Joey [Anderson] always does some great responsibility work with whoever he plays with so it really worked out and clicked a few times tonight." Coach Richardson said in his postgame presser.
The line was productive and everybody who spoke about it had good reviews so there is no reason to back off of it now.
When they take on the Stanley Cup champions on Thursday, this group should be one of the go-to lines in a lot of situations. Dickinson will be needed against some of Florida's top guns but Chicago needs offense from somewhere too. Richardson will certainly see what they're made of against an opponent like that.
