The Chicago Blackhawks made some big additions over the summer in an effort to build a better team around young superstar Connor Bedard. One part of that plan was bringing Teuvo Teravainen back to the team that drafted him.
Teravainen turned into a high-end offensive player during his time with the Carolina Hurricanes so the Blackhawks were hoping to add some of that back into their lineup with his presence.
Early in the year, Teravainen was making an offensive impact. It wasn’t until November that things started to fall off for him. Following that lack of production for a few games in a row, there were some admitted confidence issues.
Things have been a bit better for Teravainen and all of the offensive players on the Blackhawks but he specifically had a big performance on Sunday afternoon against the New York Islanders.
In the first period, Teravainen had two primary assists where the goal wouldn’t have happened if it had not been for him. Then, with a five-on-three advantage later in the match, Teravainen scored a power-play goal off a beautiful feed by Connor Bedard.
This 3-point afternoon led to Teravainen being named the First Star of the Game. Based on his comments after the game, it seems like this was a much-needed confidence booster.
“The puck was bouncing pretty good for me and my line today. Good effort by our line.” Teravainen said of the performance of his line. “It’s good whenever you can help the team win the game.”
You know that hockey players are never going to take credit but there is no doubt that he was the spark plug for the offense in this win. He scored himself and created for others which is the ultimate sign of an offensive weapon.
Teravainen now has 7 goals and 9 assists for 16 points in 31 games played. Now that he had a big breakout performance at home, the Hawks would like to see him go on a tear to get his totals back on a better pace.
He took responsibility for his poor play earlier in the year but only he can get his game back to where it needs to be consistently. Everyone benefits when Teuvo Teravainen plays the way he did on Sunday.
