Nathan MacKinnon and Cale Makar tallied three points each while Valeri Nichushkin found the back of the net twice in the 5-4 overtime win.
First period
Islanders forward Pierre Engvall grabbed a loose puck for a breakaway and shot it past Alexandar Georgiev 5:39 into the game. Devon Toews ripped one straight down the lane to tie it up less than a minute later.
Islanders goaltender Semyon Varlamov left with less than two minutes remaining in the period and Ilya Sorokin took over between the pipes.
MacKinnon got called for roughing and Islanders forward Brock Nelson skated between Makar and Toews to wrist the puck past Georgiev with 28 seconds left in the period.

Second period
The Islanders opened up scoring with a wrist shot from Simon Holmstrom over Georgiev's shoulder 1:09 into the middle frame.
A shot block rebound bounced off Valeri Nichushkin's body and onto the tape of his stick for him to put in the back of the net at 15:42. The goal came just after the Avs power play ended.
Four minutes later, Jonathan Drouin nabbed a tape-to-tape pass from Mikko Rantanen and shot it past Sorokin to tie it three all.
Alexander Romanov's shot hit Jack Johnson's skate and ended up in the back of the net with Georgiev out of position.

Third period
Colorado was assessed a too-many-men-on-the-ice penalty but the Islanders were unable to capitalize on the man advantage.
Mike Reilly was called for interference on Andrew Cogliano midway in the period setting up a power play for the Avs.
Makar broke his stick on an attempted shot that ended up on MacKinnon's stick. He passed it to Nichushkin in front of the net who shoveled it past Sorokin to tie it up 4 - 4. It was Nichushkin's second goal of the night and 10th power play goal of the season.

Overtime
Scott Mayfield was called for holding against Nichushkin with 28 seconds left in the tie game putting the Avalanche on the power play to finish the period and start the overtime.
Nathan MacKinnon won the game on the first and only shot 32 seconds into the extra time.
His game-winner was power-play goal number five on the season and third point of the game.
