This summer, Jason Newland and I will continue our series looking at potential free agent targets who could be available on July 1.
Target: Brandon Saad – LW – 14 Years Experience
How cool would it be if the Columbus Blue Jackets brought Brandon Saad back for a second run? When he first arrived back in 2015-16, he made an instant impact. After two solid years, he was flipped back to the Chicago Blackhawks in the deal that brought Artemi Panarin to Columbus.
Now, with Saad set to hit the open market and nearing the tail end of his career, there’s a real chance the Blue Jackets could bring him back.
Stats
Saad began last season with the St. Louis Blues before being placed on waivers and later bought out. Once he became a free agent, he signed with the Vegas Golden Knights. Between both teams, he played in 72 games and put up 13 goals and 17 assists for 30 points. Over his 14-year NHL career, Saad has appeared in 935 games, scoring 266 goals and adding 263 assists for 529 points. When he signs this summer, he’ll be just 65 games away from reaching the 1,000-game milestone.
Previous Salary
At 32 years old, Saad is coming off a buyout and a one-year deal with Vegas worth $1.5 million. Contract projections suggest he could land a two-year deal around $2.5 million total this summer.
Realistic Chances of a Signing: Warm
As far as chances go, it feels like there’s a real path here. If Saad does hit the open market and new GM Don Waddell expresses interest in bringing him back, it wouldn’t be surprising to see the veteran welcome a return to Columbus.
The Blue Jackets are in a spot where they’re trying to find the right mix of pieces to support their young core and take a step forward. A player like Saad, with Stanley Cup experience and familiarity with the city and team, could be the perfect low-risk addition—and a solid win for the group on and off the ice.
