The Jackets needed to win this game. It had been since December 19th since the last time they won a game in regulation. They needed to win, and win they did.
The Jackets and Flames traded goals twice in the first period, a period which would end 2-2. Yegor Chinakhov (12) and Damon Severson (6) scored for the Jackets, while MacKenzie Weegar and Connor Zary scored for Calgary. Columbus was outshot 18-9 in the first, but the Jackets made their shots count.
Alexandre Texier would score his 7th of the year while shorthanded, the Jackets first SHG of the season to make it 3-2. This goal would count as the game-winner. It's hard to believe that the CBJ hadn't scored shorthanded this season until Thursday night.
The third period was rough. And not because the Jackets typically blow third-period leads, this time is was injuries. Dmitri Voronkov would score his 11th goal of the season, while fellow rookie Adam Fantilli scored his 12th with an empty net, to seal the game at 5-2. Before that, however, the Jackets would lose a pair of players to injury. Adam Boqvist was seated on the bench and took a stray puck to the face. HC Pascal Vincent said he saw blood and at least one tooth on the floor. A few minutes later, Jack Roslovic would be the recipient of a dirty hit from behind from Jonathan Huberdeau. The hit caused Roslovic's head to hit the glass with serious force, causing what looked like multiple cuts to his face. Blood streamed down his face on both sides as he exited the game. Huberdeau was given a 5-minute major and a game misconduct for the hit. The Jackets Voronkov would score a goal during the 5-minute power play. The Blue Jackets and Flames have played twice this season, and in both games, the Flames knocked a Jacket out of the game. Patrik Laine missed several weeks with a concussion after a hit from Rasmus Andersson back in October.
The Blue Jackets needed this win badly. Having lost the previous two games, they needed to beat a Flames team who had lost their last three. Columbus is now 15-23-9 with 39 points.
