The Blue Jackets welcomed the Edmonton Oilers into Columbus and sent them home with a 6-1 drubbing.
Who is this Columbus Blue Jackets team?
So far in the young season, they've won three games at home. In those three games, they're averaging SIX goals a game, while only giving up 2.33. Yes, you read that correctly, SIX goals a game. The CBJ has also scored 6 goals in a game on the road as well. Columbus has won four games this season and has scored six in all four. Point out one person who thought they'd score this many goals. Exactly, that person doesn't exist.
Sean Monahan(4,5), Adam Fantilli(3), Cole Sillinger(2), Mathieu Olivier(4), and Mikael Pyyhtiä provided the offense in the blowout win of Edmonton. Elvis Merzļikins was stellar and stopped 31 of 32 Edmonton shots. The Oilers ruined his shutout bid with a power play goal with only 27 seconds left in the 6-1 CBJ win. Columbus has now won 5 of 6 at home against Edmonton, including four straight.
The big story of the night for Edmonton was the loss of Connor McDavid to a lower-body injury. McDavid played just 37 seconds and would leave the game after falling into the boards. Oilers coach Kris Knoblauch said after the game that he would be sent back home for evaluation. The Oilers are scheduled to play in Nashville on Thursday.
The Jackets beat Edmonton soundly despite giving the Oilers potent power play 6 chances. Elvis Merzļikins had to make 7 saves on those power plays and would lose his shutout while on the PK with just 27 seconds left in the game. He was none too happy about that goal.
The Columbus Blue Jackets are making a lot of people eat their words so far in this young season. The team is playing a competitive, aggressive style every night and it's working in their favor so far. The Jackets are now 4-3-1 with 9 points.
The "Donkey of the Day" was Mikael Pyyhtiä.
