The Columbus Blue Jackets had one of the worst weekends any team in a wild card race could ask for.
They came into the weekend just four points back of the Montreal Canadiens for the second wild card spot. But after a brutal two-game stretch, the Blue Jackets now find themselves eight points out.
Columbus didn’t just lose both games against the Toronto Maple Leafs and Ottawa Senators — they were shut out in both, which all but ended their playoff hopes.
While it’s still technically possible for them to make the playoffs, it would now take something close to a miracle. They’d need to win at least five of their remaining six games while hoping the Canadiens and other teams ahead of them in the standings lose nearly all of theirs.
Unfortunately, it looks like the Blue Jackets will fall just short of making the postseason in a year when they overcame so much adversity. It’s disappointing given the effort they put in, but this season still marks a major step forward for a young, rebuilding Blue Jackets team.
