Former Blue Jackets prospect and 29th overall pick in the 2015 NHL Draft, Gabriel Carlsson has found a new team in his home country of Sweden.
Carlsson has signed a deal to play with Färjestad BK of the SHL. This marks the second time he has played in the SHL since leaving North America. He played for the Växjö Lakers HC after leaving the U.S. He played in the SHL before coming to America as well.
Last season, he played for EV Zug in Switzerland of the NL, where he played in 39 games and had 11 points.
"We have been looking for someone who we believe can help us, play a lot of minutes, be good defensively, stop the game and also push the puck up and follow up on offense without being a distinctly offensive defenseman. We believe that Gabriel checks all the boxes there. When we got wind that he might not stay in Switzerland, we registered our interest, and from then on he has always been our first choice," says Sporting Director Rickard Wallin
Carlsson played in parts of six seasons for the Jackets after being drafted. He played a total of 75 games, scored 3 goals, and totaled 16 points for Columbus. In the 2017 playoffs, he played in 5 games and had a single point against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
After not being tendered a contract by the CBJ, he signed a deal with Washington on July 20, 2022. He would play in six games for the Caps and had 2 assists.
Carlsson also played in 146 games for the Cleveland Monsters, scoring 6 goals and totaling 32 points. He would also play in 8 playoff games for Cleveland in 2019.
