The first period was dominated by the Senators, mainly because they had three power plays. The Jackets would kill the first two before Brady Tkachuk would score just seconds into the third power play.
The CBJ would get a power play of their own, and with 5:07 left in the period, Patrik Laine rifled a shot past Joonas Korpisalo to cut the lead to 2-1.
Just 43 seconds later, Dmitri Voronkov tied the game at two when he forced a turnover in the Jackets offensive zone. Voronkov then just turned and slung it towards Korpisalo and it snuck in.
Adam Fantilli would tip a shot from Ivan Provorov five minutes into the second period to put the Jackets ahead 3-2. The shot was taken from long-range by Provorov and tipped by Fantilli about 15 feet out. The tip by Fantilli was with one hand. It was a skilled play by the young rookie.
At 11:06, while on the power play, Zach Werenski took a shot from distance that saw Boone Jenner knock it down and past Korpisalo to make it 4-2. That made it the second power-play goal on the night the Jackets had scored.
In the third period, Ottawa pushed play and would pepper Elvis for the first 10 minutes. The CBJ killed off a Senators power play, which was their fifth of the night.
With five minutes left in the third period, the Senators had outshot them 38-23 and had the edge on shot attempts 66-39.
The Senators pulled Korpisalo with 2:00 left in the third down by two goals. The CBJ wouldn't score with the net empty but would win the game 4-2.
Just by looking at the stats, you would think the Senators would be winning this game by six goals, but in the end, the Jackets would take down the Sens.
